---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1- GM Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess legend of our time and to many & the greatest player ever. The former World Champion was ranked #1 in the world for 20 years straight. "SuperNationals is the apex of scholastic chess competitions in the United States and I'm excited to have an opportunity to give encouragement to the thousands of kids participating." - GM Kasparov
2- GM Maurice Ashley, the first African-American Grandmaster in history.
"the grandest scholastic tournament of them all... I always find it exciting that all the age groups come together for such a big competition... If you're not nervous, you're either not human or you are pretending you don't care... try to focus on the game, not the result. I try not to think about winning and losing because I can't control that. I think hard about playing the best move and best game I can. The rest will take care of itself." - GM Ashley
3- Greg Chamitoff, the chess-playing astronaut, will appear at the 2009 SuperNationals. Chamitoff, who recently returned to Earth after over 180 days in Space, is a chess aficionado. When bringing chess sets to space, he adds Velcro to the pieces to keep them from floating away.
4- Women's World Champion, Grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk. "I'm very excited to go to the SuperNationals! I love to see children playing chess. I like to see their emotions, laughs and tears, their spontaneity. Everything that unites chess and kids seems to be so amazing for me. Second, it reminds me of my youth tournaments when I always had such a good time. I can recall how I waited for these tournaments and how excited I was before each one." - GM Kosteniuk
5- GM Alexander Shabalov, four-time U.S. Champion (2007 most recent victory) emphasizes that having fun at the SuperNationals should be a priority.
6- U.S. Champion, GM Yury Shulman say "I am always excited about an event where 5,000+ people want to play chess! I am open to questions from all participants "
7- GM Alexander Stripunsky "I flew to Orlando from La Guardia Airport and the first thing I saw accessing the gate, was a group of little kids sitting on a floor and playing chess. They were completely involved in the world of 64 squares in the middle of the noisy airport. It was very touching.""The kids bring to these tournaments the spirit of the real chess lovers compared with my more prudent and calculating world of professional chess. I can feel it. And it energizes me." - GM Stripunsky
8- U.S. Women's Champion Anna Zatonskih "I am excited to get back to teaching, and to share my knowledge with some of the thousands of young chess players who are coming to Nashville! I remember five years ago, before the Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain, I studied chess for 5-6 hours a day and I exercised for one hour. It is ideal."
